Hello, friends.

I lay here, alongside two cans of warm beer, still sitting at my computer after 14 solid hours of work, when I should be sleeping, so I can keep in touch with you, friends.

Another storyboard here. I'm starting to use more variation and curves with my inklines, which I'm happy with - moving away from the "technical pen" style, and more into something flowy and organic. I'm also getting looser with photoshop. I like the shading on the foreground characters.

Directing a performance (play?) in the day, complete with creating / organizing all the technical bits (sound, lighting, video). At night, getting into this other film and working boards, different animation techniques n stuff. These are some very intense days, where it feels like my brain alone must be burning tremendous amounts of calories.

I sure hope so, cuz I've been eating a lot of chocolate bars!

Another shot almost done for my film. Just need to add the bird then animate the lights. The bird in this shot is my favorite hand-drawn animation that I've done yet. Hand-drawn (classical) animation feels sooo good. It's amazing how much easier it is to describe motion by using the motion of your own body - an arc of the fingers, holding a pencil - as opposed to the mechanical click-click of a mouse on f-curves.

Mebbe I'll post the final shot when I finish it tomorrow.

Workspace II

I guess I have an infatuation with my workspace, because seem to post photos of it fairly regularly. I guess it's a good representation of how my work is going. I also enjoy it because the space seems to change a lot - things get rearranged constantly, and I'm often working in different cities / towns these days.

I'm looking forward to working in a larger space again. Once I get back to Vancouver, we're going to rearrange everything so there's more art space. You need space to paint, and I don't have that at home right now.

I also think it's nice to have a permanent art base where you can stockpile supplies and equipment, but maybe not. I seem to be getting better at packing my studio into a laptop bag and a big plastic tote bin.

Lulu's Jewels

Away from town yesterday and today. Went "snowboarding", which turned into 15 seconds of snowboarding, 1 hour of offroad driving, and 1.5 hours of digging the truck out of a ditch. Let this be a lesson to you all: If you're ever pulling someone behind a truck on a snowboard, watch the road, not the snowboarder.

Finally back at my film. This is a composited, but not prettied-up, shot. I'll add nice lights n' colour to give it mood now.

january workspace

Finally settled into a space where I can work. Finally getting back onto my own film. Finally doing more paintings and other random art, taking care of a dog, going for snowy forest walks.

This is my little work corner.

As far as I'm concerned, Winnipeg is the best place in Canada to buy outdoor gear (cheap Canada Goose jackets!) and finished leather / fur products (mukluks / mitts / hats). This is where all the fur goes, I think. This is also where all those northern-town mail order products and catalogs (Outdoor Outfitters / Watkins) are based.

Something new for me - painting a pattern (wallpaper). I suspect that i'll be doing it more as time goes on. Really interesting way to denote negative space, by filling it with a repetitive image. That's obvious, I guess, but it's a new and exciting thing for me to play with.
